UN ABBRACCIO LUNGO 60 ANNI (AN EMBRACE LONG 60 YEARS)

The Italian Air Force announces the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the Frecce Tricolori.

An embrace lasting 60 years, six decades during which the Frecce Tricolori have represented – from America to Russia, from Northern Europe to the Middle East up to North Africa – the values, technology, competence and ability to do team of the Aeronautica Militare, becoming a true symbol of Italianness, as well as an expression of the capabilities of the national industry.” With these words, the Italian Air Force-Aeronautica Militare Italiana (AMI) opens the press release announcing the official status of the celebration for the 60th anniversary of the Frecce Tricolori.

After several postponements due to the Covid19 pandemic, the Friulian skies will finally be furrowed by the tricolor trails of the prestigious Italian aerobatic team that will celebrate its 6 decades together with a limited number of public.

The airshow will be broadcast live on Italian national network RAI1 on 18 September 2021 and streamed on the official social channels of the Aeronautica Militare Italiana  for both days.

The 313º Gruppo Addestramento Acrobatico – the Pattuglia Acrobatica Nazionale (PAN) of the Italian Air Force (AMI) better known as “Frecce Tricolori” was born on 1 March 1961 when the first 6 F-86E “Sabre” aircraft arrived in Rivolto with their pilots meet Major Pilot Mario Squarcina, the 1st Commander and founding father of the Frecce Tricolori.

To date it’s the largest aerobatic team in the world with ten aircraft, of which nine in formation and one Solo, over the years it has mainly used three types of aircraft: the North American F-86 “Sabre”, the FIAT G.91PAN and currently the wonderful Aermacchi MB-339PAN. The latter, now at the end of his “career”, will be replaced by the Aermacchi M-345 HET (High Efficiency Trainer) in the coming years. The operational headquarters are at the “MOVM Cap. Mario Visintini” Military Airport in Rivolto (UD) in Friuli.

“The human factor within the National Aerobatic Team is fundamental. We are not talking about individuals but teams, not only the pilots but also all those who work on the ground” these are the words that Lieutenant Colonel Gaetano Farina, Commander of the Frecce Tricolori dedicates to his prestigious Team.

Frecce Tricolori have three programs for the execution of its aerial acrobatics: high, low, and flat which are chosen according to the weather conditions and the conformation of the display area. The high program is chosen when the cloud base is higher than 1,000 mt and is characterized by the execution of the acrobatic figures entirely on the vertical plane; the low program is performed with low clouds (around 500-600 meters) and no vertical maneuvers are performed; finally, the flat variant involves passages of the formation at low altitude.

It will be exciting to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the most beautiful and famous aerobatic team in the world that after the exciting “Abbraccio Tricolore”, given to the Italian people during 2020 for the Pandemic and culminating with the overflight of the city of Rome on 2nd June 2020, they had been forced to stay on the ground until now.

Best Shot Aircraft will be present at the event on both dates with its team to involve those who unfortunately will not be present.

Happy to see the Frecce again and to be able to celebrate with them, we give you an appointment on 18th and 19th September 2021 in Rivolto (UD).
