In a milestone that marks two decades of skill and grace in the sky, Patrulla Aspa, the only five-aircraft helicopter aerobatic patrol in the world, commemorates its twentieth anniversary since its creation in 2003. Based in the town from Armilla, Granada, this prominent unit of the Spanish Air and Space Force has captivated national and international audiences with its impressive displays over the years.
An innovative start: The Eurocopter EC-120B and the vision of Patrulla Aspa

In 2000, the Eurocopter EC-120B helicopter arrived on the aeronautical scene, an aircraft with unique characteristics that made it an ideal choice for acrobatic maneuvers. With an articulated rotor and an impressive speed of 150 kts, this helicopter offered the perfect combination of power and maneuverability to challenge the skies.
It was on September 24, 2003 when the seed of the Patrulla Aspa was planted after a demonstration before the then Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Eduardo González-Gallarza Morales, at the Armilla Air Base. Since then, the mission of the Patruilla Aspa has been clear and defined: to increase the prestige of the Air and Space Army inside and outside the national territory, bring the Armed Forces closer to civil society and promote the military and aeronautical vocation.
A team of excellence: Pilots and support staff
Commander José Ignacio Jaime Peñuela was the first to lead the Patrulla Aspa at its beginning. The Patrulla Aspa team is made up of a select group of regular pilots, reserve pilots, mechanics and support personnel, all of them dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of excellence and safety.
Reserve pilots have a minimum of 600 flight hours, with 300 of those hours dedicated specifically to helicopters and 200 hours in the EC-120B. On the other hand, regular pilots must accumulate at least 1,000 flight hours, with 800 hours in helicopters and 400 hours in the EC-120B. In addition, they must comply with rigorous standard instruction and training plans, which include tests in various weather conditions and flight scenarios.

Milestones and Exhibits: A Legacy of Skill and Professionalism
Since its debut in 2004, the Patrulla Aspa has left an indelible mark in the world of acrobatic aviation, performing exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Over the years, he has participated in numerous prestigious events, bringing his show to audiences in different European countries. In its first year, the Aspa Patrol held seven exhibitions, marking the beginning of a career full of achievements and recognition. Since then, she has participated in notable events such as the Red Bull Air Race and the Women’s Ski World Cup, demonstrating her versatility and exceptional skills in the air.
Standing out among her most memorable milestones is her participation in the Radom, Poland air show, which marked her furthest trip to date. Additionally, in 2016, Patrulla Aspa challenged the skies by performing a higher altitude flight in Zurich, Switzerland, demonstrating its ability to face challenges and overcome limits.

Continuing the legacy: The future of the Patrulla Aspa
As the Patrulla Aspa celebrates its 20th anniversary, it looks to the future with determination and enthusiasm. With a legacy of excellence and professionalism, this outstanding unit continues to inspire new generations of aviators and spectators, carrying with it the spirit of innovation and dedication that has characterized it since its inception.
With exhibitions planned at national and international events, Patrulla Aspa remains committed to its mission of representing the best of the Spanish Air and Space Army, captivating audiences with its spectacular display of skill and ability in the air.
